Code Consulting Services

At Tier One Fire Consulting, code consulting is the foundation of everything we do. Our work begins and ends with a commitment to protecting life — ensuring that every building, system, and design supports the ultimate mission of keeping firefighters and occupants safe. We specialize in fire protection and life safety code interpretation, design integration, and compliance solutions that align with the intent of the International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code (IFC), and NFPA standards. Whether advising on new construction, complex renovations, or high-risk occupancies, our consulting team brings clarity to the most challenging code questions — helping architects, engineers, and owners deliver compliant, resilient, and defensible designs.

Code Research & Consultation

Our code research and consultation service provides comprehensive analysis of fire protection and life safety requirements across all applicable codes, standards, and local amendments. We interpret and apply the IBC, IFC, NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code), and related NFPA series standards to evaluate the intent, applicability, and enforceability of fire protection provisions for your project. From egress sizing and occupancy classification to fire-resistance ratings and system design requirements, Tier One Fire Consulting delivers accurate, defensible interpretations that reduce uncertainty and improve project outcomes. Our clients rely on us to bridge the gap between design intent and code compliance, ensuring every project is both safe and permit-ready.

Alternative Means & Methods

When prescriptive code paths restrict design flexibility, we prepare detailed Alternative Means and Methods (AM&M) reports in accordance with IBC Section 104.11 and IFC Section 104.9. These technical reports document equivalent fire protection and life safety performance through engineering analysis, NFPA-based design criteria, and performance modeling where applicable. Our team develops each AM&M with precision and clarity — aligning the proposed solution with code intent and ensuring the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) has the justification needed for approval. This service allows innovative designs to move forward safely, efficiently, and with confidence in their code defensibility.
